TikTok Grants Viewers Power to Limit Artificial Intelligence-Made Content in Their Feeds

Users will soon have a updated setting that permits them to lessen the volume of artificial intelligence-produced videos appearing in their streams. This initiative comes as the platform announced that it now features over 1 bn content made with AI.

Trial and Implementation

The update is being tested over the coming weeks before a full-scale rollout. This shift aligns with a surge in AI-generated material, driven by new content generation software.

AI Content on Other Platforms

It has been noted that almost 10% of the most rapidly expanding channels on another major platform primarily display clips produced artificially. A considerable share of this material is considered low-quality AI content, a label for inferior, bulk-generated content that is typically absurd or surreal.

“We know from our community that numerous viewers appreciate content created using AI tools, ranging from computer-generated images to educational videos, and we want to offer the community the option to increase or decrease of that, according to their own likes,” stated a spokesperson.

Scale of AI Content

The service announced that there are currently 1.3 billion videos on its app identified as made with AI. In total, over 100 million videos are added to the app each day, making AI content a limited part of its total content library.

User Control Features

Viewers will be able to decrease or raise the volume of AI-generated videos they see by opening the “manage topic” setting in the application and picking AI-made media. Additional categories that can already be modified under the tool include news, fashion, cosmetics, and choreography.

Content Labeling and Policies

Its guidelines mandate users to label convincing AI-made content, and it prohibits harmful deepfakes of celebrities or critical incidents. Any authentic-looking artificial content that is without a tag can be deleted under its terms of service.

Furthermore, the service will now add an artificially created tag to content made using its proprietary AI systems, or identified by an industry-wide initiative for identifying content made by AI. This measure is aimed to help prevent users from trying to evade the disclosure requirement.

Responsible AI Funding

TikTok is furthermore introducing a $2m AI literacy fund for experts and institutions to produce learning resources about using AI responsibly. This program will assist non-profit groups specializing in educating coding and technology.

Moderation Strategy

TikTok has supported its safety measures, amid controversy over plans to lay off a large number of review team members in Britain. The company is set to eliminate hundreds of positions in its user protection division in its British office, with worker representatives and online safety experts raising concerns that people are being substituted by machine-led review.

A company official explained that staff-based oversight would remain essential, but AI can protect employees by removing the most distressing content before it has to be seen by staff. The platform reported a significant reduction in explicit and harmful content reviewed by safety staff over the last 12 months due to the use of its machine learning processes.

We believe it is crucial to integrate humans and technology to ensure user safety,” the official commented. “We’ll have humans as part of that process, but we also think it’s highly necessary to minimize viewing of harmful content as swiftly, which is the area in which a extensive automated help is making a difference work at speed.”
