Larian Studios Announce a Fresh Divinity, Labeling it Their Most Ambitious RPG Yet

The buzz around this year's gaming ceremony was significant, especially after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer packed with striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very descent into chaos.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This distinction implies that the team might be building a real-time experience rather than another tactical title. For now, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it sparked the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, branching plots, and deep class systems—traits that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs that are viable with a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.

The series is also notoriously permissive, allowing players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be solved in multiple ways, often in surprising fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, players can anticipate more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
