Fresh analysis reveals that patients who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users buying such treatments must be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a return to original weight within about a year and a half.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually see a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Experts believe the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Testimonies
People who have stopped the medication describe a intense resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and you're instantly ravenous," described an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Use is more common among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, researchers stress that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural changes.
