The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
