An Generosity of Unknown Individuals: How a Person I Had Just Met Supported Me Obtain the Role That Transformed My Existence

In the late 1980s, I was beginning a backpacking trip to Europe with a companion. Because my companion was considering starting a postgraduate program in NYC, we had planned a fortnight visit there en route to London.

We reached the graduate housing, a big multi-story edifice on the UWS called International House. Setting down our luggage, we made our way to the cafeteria, where we picked up meals, found a table, and began chatting with fellow residents.

Beside me was an individual of Iraqi origin enrolled in an engineering program at Columbia University. He wanted to know what I my profession was, and I explained that I had recently completed my studies with a degree in science and had been conducting research with electron microscopy.

He pointed out that there was an research lab at the institution – close to the engineering faculty, which was how he knew about it. He suggested that I consider applying for a position with them. I laughed it off, saying that I was about to fly to Europe and, even more importantly, I lacked a US visa.

The following day I went out exploring, going back to the cafeteria that evening. The Iraqi student approached me and told me that he had set up a meeting for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Because he had taken the effort, I showed up for the discussion – but straight off told my host that I was without a work permit, so I was probably wasting her time.

In typical New York fashion – a metropolis where everything seems achievable – she said: “We'll handle it. How soon can you begin?” I never got on that flight to London.

I worked there for three years. A perk of the job was that I was granted no-cost classes at Columbia, and I took advantage to finish a master’s of international affairs.

I lost touch with him and I am unaware of his full name, but his remarkable generosity transformed my future in multiple respects. I would never have had the bravery or nerve to approach someone at an prestigious college and seek a position. Moreover, I had consistently hoped to take classes in another country, but lacked the financial means without that tuition waiver.

What's more, that job in New York led me to a job in Zurich where I encountered my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising four wonderful sons and daughters. It was a total sliding doors moment. That benevolent individual redirected my path in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
